| The Dangers of Pet Store Puppies. Puppy Mills Uncovered. The sad thing is, everybody doesn't know what is "behind the scenes" of pet stores. There sit, cute puppies looking at you with their sweet eyes. It is not the puppy you should be scared of, it is where that puppy came from is the thing you need to be concerned about. Have you ever wondered where they do come from? All pet stores get their puppies from Puppy mills, or pet brokers that get them from another puppy mill. Buying from a reputable breeder would be much too expensive, and, they wouldn't be able to get the puppies from them because reputable breeders care where their puppies go. If you don't know what a puppy mill is, you will know now. A puppy mill is where people have 200, 300, 400 dogs of many different breeds. When a puppy mill gets so big, each dog is tattooed or branded with a number. That is all each dog is, a number. The owners are breeding the bitches every heat cycle until sometimes, death. Their only goal is for the money, not the health, not the well being, and they could care less about where those puppies go once they are born, as long as they make a buck. I have heard and witnessed what happens once the puppies get to the pet stores. The puppies come in tiny crates, usually 6 or 7 to a crate made for a small dog. They are shipped like this for hours at a time, with no food, water or attention. Once they get to the store, they are covered in feces and urine. Usually 1 or 2 are dead and the survivors are malnourished, ill and weak. Most of the puppies were taken from the mothers' at 3, 4, or 5 weeks of age so that when they are shipped to be sold, they are 6 or 7 weeks, and ready to leave after a full week of sitting in the pet store crate. This is why pet stores won't let you hold the puppies for a while after they arrive, because they are still too young. They are not nearly 8 weeks old. Most, actually come to the pet stores with barely any teeth, and they can't eat the hard food they are given so, they start to starve and get thinner and eventually die. Puppies need food for brain development, and nutrition. To assure that the workers don't have to clean the cages all the time, the puppies are given 1/4 of a cup of food a day per puppy verses 3/4 of a cup a day. They are getting less than 1/2 of what they should be. This also means less money is spent on puppy food. What happens with this is, the puppies get the least amount of nutrition so they die within days or weeks of reaching the pet store or even after the sale of the puppy. Pet stores don't care about any of the puppies, they get "credit" for each puppy that dies in that month so that the store doesn't loose any of its profit. All pet stores sell puppies this way there is not one that doesn't. Usually, when one puppy leaves the tiny glass crate in the pet store, another puppy will replace it and the other puppys' feces, urine, and chewed up plastic bed are all left over for the replacement puppy to get sick on. Again, the pet stores don't care about living, breathing, beings. Have you ever been into a pet store and they won't let your child under 18 hold any of the puppies? Most breeders I know let any kid of just about any age hold their puppies from the beginning. So, you get a ill behaved dog if you buy it from a store, because the brain development from holding them, is not there. The stores don't want to pay for vet bills that are more than what they paid for the puppy (usually less than $100). In this effect, the puppy gets little or no vet care. There is a reason the being of puppy mills is even in existence,it is to "feed" the pet stores so they can make a good profit. Once we stop buying from pet stores, then this is when the over population will go down significantly. Puppies from the stores, get little attention so they are mean, shy, brain damaged, or wild. They are never held except for when someone decides to "look" at them and that person has to be over 18. When they are in the tiny "show cases" they are usually taunted by kids which can also make them mean. Pet store puppies are so badly cared for that, they can and usually will, grow up with diseases, defects, severe mental retardation, and malnutrition.(malnutrition, leads to mental retardation) We have to realize, this is a real issue that is hurting innocent puppies every minute. If you don't buy a puppy from a pet store, then this gives another puppy mill puppy a chance to live. If the pet stores realize they are not selling what they bought, they will reduce the buying list and millers will slow down their breeding process. Every person I have talked to that has bought a puppy from a pet store has said, their dog ended up with cancer, cataracts, back and stomach problems, severe hip and ear problems, and had too all be put to sleep due to poor puppy care. The first year of a puppy's life is most important and when it is neglected as said above, bad things will come out of it. We have a local pet store, and when I went in I asked the lady approximately, how many "breeders" do you have on your buying list. She said, "Not enough. We don't have enough breeders for the amount of puppies we sell a day". I could not believe how people bought, and bought pet store puppies. Then she tells me, "We just sold one of our puppies to a lady that will breed her and supply us with more puppies, so that'll help". That was when I left. Since that, I never went back in. I didn't want to buy food, toys, or anything from them to help keep their "food chain" going. It isn't worth it. For every pet store puppy bought, 2 more will replace it and 1 out of those 2, will die. That's 50 puppies a week that'll die and more than 3,000 puppies a year. The statistics on this research is very moving. If more and more die, then the puppy mills keep going round and round and dogs keep dying everyday when instead, they could be in a nice caring and loving home. Nearly 5 1/2 million puppy mill puppies are born every year. Only 3 million will actually live, and only another million will actually find forever homes. What happens to the other 1 1/2 million? They are left in puppymills, pounds, or rescue organizations. By the time most of them reach 2, they will have to be put to sleep because there are just no homes for them. The average mill female will produce more than 60 puppies in her lifetime. On average, that's more than 10 litters. Once she is passed her breeding prime, she is killed or starved to death. Keep in mind, animal cruelty, is linked to puppy mills. These are all factual, and non fiction events that have all occurred. None of this information was made up or false. This is all to speak about the dangers, and real truth about puppy mills and how they are effecting all of us in a different way, everyday. If you are looking for a puppy to add to your family, you just have to research deeply and take the time and don't rush. You may feel bad for the little puppies in the pet stores but, you aren't helping him by buying him, you are actually hurting all the other puppies that will come after he leaves. If he is replaced by another puppy, the puppymills stay in business, so do the pet stores. In MN last Summer, on television the news caster reported that 80 Golden Retrievers were rescued from a puppy mill out in North Dakota. The reporters, and veterinarians said all the dogs were either, bruised, had something broken, sick, had wounded or open sores, or pregnant. If you have ever had a Golden before, you would know, it is not easy to get them to go mean. Luckily, non of the puppies, or adults had to be put down and they were all rescued and got full veterinarian care until they were ready to be put up for adoption. For the mean golden, he was provided a loving home and is working through what he had put up with, with extensive attention and tender loving care. Not every puppy millers dogs are so incredibly fortunate to be rescued. The owner of all these dogs, had a petition up for his mill that stated he wanted the community to support his "kennel". He was indeed convicted of animal cruelty and is currently serving up to a year in prison. If we put in the effort now, then it will stop the pain for future dogs and help the present. Having a puppy mill is a very selfish and cruel thing to do to animals. It just goes to show you how anybody will do anything to try to make a simple dollar. Unfortunately, not all dogs are as fortunate to be rescued, instead, they are in cages just being bred. And until recently, the ugly truth of puppy mills has been hidden. But when problems with many of the puppies bought at pet stores across the country began to surface, consumers and animal lovers alike began asking hard questions. Puppies with seizures, parasites, infections, bacteria, and behavioral problems were being seen far too often to be merely coincidental.
